Who we are

Congregation Beth Jacob welcomes all Jews in the area to participate in our worship and to join in our community activities. We especially invite Southern Illinois University students, their families, Brehm Preparatory School students, and their families.

In our worship service, we include a range of worship styles and individual expressions, celebrating our diverse community of people who have arrived here with different Jewish backgrounds. We use a prayer book that works for either a Conservative or a Reform service, and our members lead services on a volunteer basis. Each leader puts their own touch on the service, so some services have more singing, some have more Hebrew, some have more English.

There are no tickets for our High Holiday services, and you do not have to be a member to attend our services. Everyone is invited to all services and events.

The original Beth Jacob synagogue was established on December 2, 1945. Since our founding in 1945, we have been the center of Jewish religious, social, and educational life in our part of Southern Illinois. If you are interested in becoming a member and financially supporting Congregation Beth Jacob, please contact our Treasurer, Jack Wides.

Congregation Beth Jacob is also an active participant in the work of the Carbondale Interfaith Council.
